Open-Source Invoice Assistant Runs AI Locally to Manage Freelancer Expenses

A developer has built InvoiceMate AI, a local-first assistant that helps freelancers, developers, consultants, and small business owners manage invoices and receipts. The tool uses local OCR and an open-weight language model via Ollama to extract vendor names, dates, totals, taxes, and categories without paid API requests. Extracted data is checked by validation logic and reviewed by the user before being saved to local SQLite storage. The project, built with React, TypeScript, Python, and FastAPI, is designed to work offline after initial setup and is open to community contributions on GitHub.

AI agent's model comparison experiment flawed by unverified runtime model identity

An AI agent set out to test whether a different model would understand its decision-making document the same way. The second reader, running on a model from another company, matched four of seven questions and all five protected values. However, the reader could not confirm its actual runtime model, relying instead on an outdated name in its setup file. The reader also saw extra lines because its search pulled in terms from other sections, so the result cannot isolate the model as the cause. The author concludes the result is one unconfirmed sample and that the model variable was never measured.

A workflow for turning scattered research sources into reusable linked notes

The author found that saving too many research links only created an unread pile, so they built Research Brain to select sources and keep the key ideas. The system stores notes in a local Obsidian vault of Markdown files, with each concept note keeping its sources, limits, and open questions. An optional MCP adapter lets an agent in another project retrieve these notes read-only, labeling them as untrusted data. The pipeline collects candidates from feeds, official pages, and search, then deduplicates, sanitizes for prompt-injection patterns, and curates by topic rules. Source records and a health check are meant to keep claims traceable, though the author notes filters can miss attacks and do not establish that claims are true.

Ivory Launches Dedicated Website, Docs and New Logo for Its Database Cluster Tool

The open-source tool Ivory, which deploys, monitors and repairs database clusters, now has its own website at ivory.veegres.com. Until now it was documented only through a GitHub repository, which the author says no longer suits a tool that handles seven cluster types and offers an MCP server for AI agents. The site presents Ivory's core value: it works over plain SSH with no agents, Kubernetes or Ansible, and supports PostgreSQL, etcd, Redis, ClickHouse, MongoDB and ZooKeeper through one consistent interface. Documentation has been reorganized into searchable sections, and the docs are still sourced from the repository's Markdown files, so GitHub rendering is unchanged. PostgreSQL with Patroni and plain PostgreSQL replication are marked stable, while the other engines remain in beta.

Local 4B model drafts freelance quotes from client briefs, tested on eight real briefs

A developer built briefquote, a tool that drafts freelance project quotes without sending client briefs to a hosted service. It uses Gemma 3 4B, running locally through Ollama, to extract a structured scope from a brief, and TabPFN, a small-table model trained on the freelancer's past jobs, to estimate hours, price and on-time probability. On eight real client briefs the pipeline produced valid output every time, and three were usable as a first draft without major edits. The author notes that the demo's job history is synthetic, so the estimates demonstrate the workflow rather than real-world accuracy. The project is open source under the MIT license, and no paying users have been reported yet.

Firefox Setup Tips for Students: Sessions, Containers, Dark Mode and Research Tools

A DEV Community guide outlines a Firefox configuration aimed at academic research and study. It recommends Named Sessions to save and restore groups of tabs tied to specific projects, so context survives across days and restarts. Multi-Account Containers can isolate university logins from personal accounts to avoid authentication conflicts with library databases and course systems. The article also suggests dark-mode tools, uBlock Origin for reducing trackers and ads, and Reader View for distraction-free reading of long articles. It additionally points to annotation and citation tools such as Hypothesis and Zotero for managing research material.

When splitting AI agents into multiple subagents helps, and when it only adds cost

Dividing one AI agent into several is a common design choice that is often more expensive than it is worth. The main benefit is that each subagent works in its own clean context window, returning only a short summary, which helps with broad tasks that would overflow a single context. Independent subtasks can also run in parallel. The costs include substantially higher token usage, with one cited multi-agent research system using about 15 times the tokens of a plain chat, plus compounding errors across handoffs, loss of context, and harder debugging. The article recommends building and measuring a single well-equipped agent first, splitting only when context overflow or clearly parallel work justifies it, and always comparing against the simpler version.

Firefox Setup Tips for Remote Work: Containers, Sessions and Dark Mode

Remote workers often mix work and personal browsing in one profile, which can lead to logging into the wrong accounts or sharing the wrong files. Firefox's Multi-Account Containers extension isolates cookies into separate color-coded spaces, letting users stay signed into several accounts at once. Tab Manager & Session Saver lets users save and restore named sets of tabs to switch smoothly between projects or clients. NightOwl adds per-domain dark mode to reduce eye strain during long browsing sessions, while performance can be improved by closing unused tabs and disabling unneeded extensions.

ThinkingBox Study Finds Many Failed AI Agent Runs Showed No Tool Error

Microsoft's ThinkingBox evaluated AI agents by the backend state they left behind across 507 workflows. Of 79,853 failed runs, 67% ended without any tool error being reported. The findings suggest agents can claim task completion while the underlying database shows otherwise. The work highlights the need to verify outcomes at the data layer rather than trusting agent self-reports. The item was featured in the weekly WeeklyFoo digest of developer resources.

How to Set Google Preferred Sources to Shape AI Answers and News Results

Google's October 15 update lets users choose preferred publishers that appear higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews answers. Preferred sources also gain prominence in the News carousel within AI Mode, according to the company. Google reports that usage of the feature has grown sevenfold as people curate their results. Users can set their sources by searching a topic, opening the customize icon beside Top stories, and adding trusted publications, then refreshing results. The guide argues that choosing outlets you actually read yields more in-depth answers.

What a pentest closure record should contain for auditors and customers

A pentest report lists vulnerabilities, but auditors and enterprise customers want a record showing what was fixed, what changed, and proof the fix worked. The article proposes six fields per finding: a stable ID and weakness with location, scope agreement, the change and its rationale, who authored and reviewed it, a rescan confirming the fix, and the merge date. It illustrates this with a rehearsal Fix Sprint on the deliberately vulnerable OWASP NodeGoat app, where 15 of 16 in-scope findings were fixed across five pull requests. One finding, a committed TLS private key, was explained rather than changed, since deleting the file would not remove it from git history. The article also warns against closing findings by deleting evidence, merging without rescanning, and bundling many fixes into one pull request.

Remote NT Housing Repair Triage System Ranks Fault Urgency, Not Tenant Identity

A student team built ReachNT, a prototype system for triaging repair requests in remote Northern Territory public housing, where jobs often wait weeks because of trip costs. The system ranks repairs by urgency, groups nearby communities into shared weekly trips, and explains to tenants why their repair waited. Because no public NT repair dataset exists, the team generated synthetic requests, while geography, house counts and response-time data come from real sources and are labeled accordingly in the demo. The urgency model reaches a ROC-AUC of 0.84 on unseen wording and catches 99.3% of dangerous reports only when combined with human review. Its confidence scores proved poorly calibrated, so the team chose not to show confidence percentages to tenants.

Railo Benchmark on 11 Public Repos Finds Most Proposed Security Fixes Were Wrong

Railo is a GitHub Action that flags security issues in pull requests and proposes rule-based code fixes. Its authors had previously measured fix quality only on examples they wrote themselves, which they now see as an easy test. They ran the same pipeline on eleven public repositories they did not write, six deliberately vulnerable apps and five well-maintained projects, and reviewed every proposed fix by hand. Across 923 findings they proposed 162 fixes, and 95 of those were judged incorrect, mostly edits to vendored libraries, test data and seed data, though none broke file syntax. After adjustments the proposed fixes dropped to 67, and some cases are now flagged for human review instead of being patched.

Extracting Text from PowerPoint Slides and Tables in Java

A DEV Community tutorial explains how Java developers can pull text out of PowerPoint files instead of copying it manually. It covers three cases: reading every slide in a presentation, targeting one specific slide, and extracting content from tables. The examples rely on the Spire.Presentation library, which is added to a Maven project through a pom.xml dependency. Each sample is a standalone program that writes its output to a UTF-8 text file. The guide also notes that slide indexes begin at zero, so slide numbers must be adjusted when accessing collections.

Optimizing a Browser Game's Pages for AI Search Engines as Well as Google

Search is increasingly happening in AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, which extract and cite pages rather than rank them. The author applied these changes to AgentSlash, a free instant-play HTML5 game, which already had standard technical SEO such as canonical tags, social cards, and VideoGame, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema. Schema markup was noted as carrying over well to AI crawlers, while the copy was rewritten to open each section with a direct one-sentence answer and use question-format headings. The author also added an /llms.txt file and explicitly allowed AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt, since default setups sometimes block them unintentionally. The article links to the game's page as a live example of these changes.

How to Freeze Your Credit at All Three Major US Bureaus

A credit freeze is presented as a free and effective way to guard against identity theft by blocking lenders from accessing your credit report. Under federal law the freeze costs nothing, does not affect your credit score, and can be lifted whenever you need to apply for credit. Because each bureau operates separately, a freeze must be placed individually with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, using their online portals or phone lines. The freeze typically takes effect within minutes online, though phone and mail requests take longer, and the article advises creating a PIN or password and keeping confirmations safe. The piece also notes that a freeze does not stop misuse of existing cards or block every type of prescreened offer, so continued account monitoring remains advisable.
