Piral: How a German Client Project Became an Open-Source Micro Frontend Framework

Piral is an open-source micro frontend framework created by developer Florian Rappl, born not from a side project but from a real client engagement. The framework allows a stable app shell to be extended at runtime by independently developed and deployed modules called pilets, enabling multiple teams to ship frontend features without sharing a codebase. Its origins trace to a smart-home portal rewrite for German energy company RWE, where a loosely coupled frontend approach proved highly effective. The concept was later applied at ZEISS, where previous attempts at a unified customer portal had repeatedly failed due to coordination bottlenecks in a shared frontend monolith. The success at both companies raised the question of why the same architecture had to be rebuilt from scratch each time, leading to Piral's formalization as a reusable open-source framework.
