Developer Creates Pure CSS Feast Inspired by Bengali Home Cooking

A web developer submitted a CSS art project called 'Ghorer Thali' (meaning 'homemade thali') for the DEV Community Frontend Challenge: Comfort Food Edition. The project recreates a full South Asian feast — including Peshawari meat, beef curry, and chicken biryani — using only HTML, pure CSS, and a small amount of vanilla JavaScript, with no images or canvas. Built with gradients, layering, and keyframe animations, the interactive scene lets users click each dish to spotlight it, triggering steam effects and descriptive notes in Bangla or English. The creator chose Bangla as the default language to reflect the cultural authenticity of the table it represents. Accessibility features such as aria-pressed labels and live status notes were also incorporated into the design.
