Sony Music and Warner Chappell sue Anthropic over tens of thousands of copyrighted works
Sony Music and Warner Chappell have filed a lawsuit against AI company Anthropic in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The music companies allege infringement of tens of thousands of copyrighted works and are seeking up to $150,000 in damages per work. An additional $25,000 per instance is being sought for cases where copyright management information was allegedly removed. If the court rules in their favor and awards maximum damages, the total could reach several billion dollars. This case adds to Anthropic's growing legal troubles, which recently included a $1.5 billion settlement with the publishing industry.
