Pyrocumulonimbus: How intense wildfires can generate their own thunderstorms
Extremely intense wildfires are capable of generating their own weather phenomena, including a type of storm cloud known as pyrocumulonimbus. NASA has described pyrocumulonimbus as the 'fire-breathing dragon of clouds' due to its dramatic and dangerous nature. These fire-generated thunderstorms can make wildfires significantly more deadly and unpredictable. The phenomenon occurs when heat and energy from severe wildfires rise powerfully enough to influence atmospheric conditions above them.
