What Is Agentic AI? A Plain-Language Breakdown of How It Works

Agentic AI refers to one or more AI agents that work autonomously toward a broader goal by breaking it down into tasks, using tools, memory, and permissions to execute them. Unlike basic chatbots that simply respond to queries, agentic systems can plan, act, and adapt across multiple steps without constant human input. These systems come in two main forms: single-agent, where one AI handles all tasks, and multi-agent, where several specialized agents collaborate toward a shared objective. Key components enabling agentic behavior include tool access, short- and long-term memory, and layered permissions that govern what an agent can read or modify. Importantly, agentic AI is not fully autonomous by default — many systems incorporate human-in-the-loop controls that require approval before high-stakes actions are taken.
