BCI proposes 30x hike in advocate enrolment fee in draft amendment bill

The Bar Council of India has released the Draft Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposing to raise the advocate enrolment fee from Rs 750 to Rs 22,500. The draft bill also recommends introducing entrance examinations for law school admissions and revising the All India Bar Examination. Additional proposals include expanding the Legal Education Committee and making continuing legal education mandatory for practising advocates. Stakeholders such as law universities and bar associations have been invited to submit feedback to the BCI by 3 pm on July 31, 2026.
