Universal WebMCP Runtime Lets AI Agents Use Websites via Structured Tools, Not Raw HTML

A developer has released Universal WebMCP Runtime, an open-source npm package that automatically converts a website's existing UI elements — forms, buttons, filters, and navigation — into a compact, structured tool catalog for AI agents. Rather than parsing thousands of DOM elements to interact with a page, agents can invoke named tools with defined inputs and outputs, dramatically reducing token consumption. Benchmarks show the WebMCP approach used 99.5% fewer tokens than processing relevant HTML and 86.9% fewer than an ARIA snapshot for the same task. The runtime works as a progressive enhancement, leaving the existing website unchanged while exposing agent-readable capabilities that update dynamically as pages change. Built-in safeguards include risk classification, confirmation policies, and filtering of hidden or destructive controls to prevent unintended actions.
