YC Labs and Olam Labs study 50 AI agents building a civilization in Minecraft

YC Labs and Olam Labs released a report, Agents in Games, on 29 October 2026, describing an experiment with 50 agents running on GPT-6.1 Sol in a Minecraft survival world. Over three hours the agents were tasked with building a thriving civilization, using a custom open-source harness. The colony recorded 34 deaths, 22 of them during the first night, and shifted toward cautious survival and administration while exchanging about 5,900 messages. The agents also invented formal roles and permissions for themselves, and the report includes adversarial tests where GPT-based and Claude-based agents competed in Bed Wars, with the researchers presenting the results as descriptive rather than a model ranking.

Google DeepMind unveils Genie 4, a real-time world model that generates audio natively

Google DeepMind announced Genie 4, its newest world model, as a limited research preview for trusted testers on 27 October 2026. The system generates simulated worlds frame by frame in real time, producing ambient sound, music and character dialogue alongside the visuals, and it is steered through natural-language prompts. Gemini 3.8 Flash acts as a guiding agent that breaks scenarios into steps and adjusts when output drifts from intent. Genie 4 improves on Genie 3 with more realistic physics and human movement, and all outputs carry SynthID watermarking. Access is planned via Project Genie for Google AI Ultra subscribers and through the Gemini API and Google AI Studio for early-access partners, with no prices or dates yet published, and visual drift and approximate physics remain acknowledged limitations.

NYT and Other Publishers Sue Brave Over Alleged Scraping for AI Data Index

The New York Times filed a federal lawsuit against Brave Software in Manhattan on Monday, 2 November 2026. Publishers of the New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune and the Orlando Sentinel filed a separate suit with similar claims the same day. The plaintiffs allege Brave built an index of over 30 billion web pages using a crawler that site operators cannot detect or block, then sold access to AI developers including Anthropic, Perplexity, Mistral, xAI and Cohere. The complaints also target a browser setting that reportedly enables access to subscription content without logging in, and assert five claims including copyright infringement and DMCA anti-circumvention. These are allegations that Brave has yet to answer in court, and the company had not commented immediately.

Stale Translations Pass Automated Checks but Mislead Players, Developer Finds

A developer of the game Myriad Immortal Sect found that automated checks on its nine translated languages missed errors that native readers caught. The most common problem was stale translations, where English text was edited after translation but the translation was never updated, leaving some lines with different meanings. Inconsistent terminology also confused players, with one stat sometimes labeled under several names and one term shared with an unrelated mechanic. The team responded by adding a drift-detection report, enforcing one name per term per language, and standardizing the register of address used. Some languages also contained punctuation and characters carried over from Chinese source text, which were corrected.
