Tool to Strip Google's SynthID AI Watermarks Goes Mainstream With pip Install

An open-source Python library called remove-ai-watermarks, with over 5,100 GitHub stars, can strip Google's SynthID invisible watermarks from AI-generated images and video. The tool targets multiple watermark standards including SynthID, C2PA, EXIF, and XMP, with its paid tier specifically focused on removing the harder-to-beat invisible watermark layer using GPU-based diffusion regeneration. Because SynthID's detectors are not publicly available, neither removal tools nor newsrooms can independently verify whether a watermark has been successfully stripped or was simply never present. Security researchers warn that any editorial workflow treating a negative watermark result as evidence of human-made content is fundamentally flawed, since absence of a watermark has never been reliable proof of origin. The recommended approach is to treat watermark detection as a positive signal only, with a clean result defaulting to a neutral verdict rather than clearing content as authentic.
