Teen founder Caymus Maxson removes 6 tons of beach debris through nonprofit Trash Turtles

Caymus 'CO' Maxson, a 16-year-old from California, founded the youth-led nonprofit Trash Turtles after witnessing beach trash being pushed into the ocean at age 10. Over six years, the organization has conducted more than 50 beach cleanups, clearing debris across over 300 miles of coastline. The group has also recycled 75,000 cigarette butts and removed a total of six tons of waste. Maxson has now been recognized for her environmental efforts with a 2026 Gloria Barron Prize.
