A study involving 1,000 Swiss citizens used buried cotton underpants as a low-cost tool to assess soil biological activity. Participants buried pairs of organic cotton underwear in the ground and later dug them up to measure how much had decomposed. The rate of decomposition served as an indicator of microbial life and overall soil health. Researchers found that land use was the most significant factor influencing how quickly the cotton broke down.
