Survey of 50+ Developers Reveals AI Session Loss Is a Widespread Pain Point

A developer surveyed over 50 people across coding communities to understand what happens when an AI session is interrupted mid-task. Surprisingly, non-technical users such as a tax lawyer and a school administrator described the frustration most clearly, citing the need to re-explain everything from scratch. Nearly all respondents noted that chat history is unreliable, often retaining failed attempts and incorrect AI assumptions from earlier in the session. Those with the most effective workflows kept a record of working state outside the chat, using tools like git diffs or brief personal notes. The research found that framing the problem as a specific painful moment — rather than abstract concepts like 'context management' — consistently prompted the strongest and most candid responses.
