USGS Released 72 kg of Red Dye into Idaho River to Study Water Flow

The US Geological Survey injected 72.57 kg of Rhodamine WT dye into Idaho's Kootenai River in 2017 as part of a water dispersal study. The dye was released over a span of just 90 seconds to observe how a tracer moves through a flowing river system. Researchers monitored the dye's movement using instruments placed directly in the river. An aircraft flying at 1,000 metres also captured hyperspectral images at 0.5-metre pixel resolution across 48 spectral bands to track the dye from above.
