Over 80,000 Cases Pending in High Courts for 30+ Years, SC Backlog Persists

More than 10,000 cases have been pending in the Supreme Court of India for over a decade, while high courts across the country carry a backlog of over 80,000 cases that have remained unresolved for more than 30 years. Despite considerable investment in court infrastructure and technology, case pendency has not meaningfully improved. The law minister attributed the delays to judicial vacancies and issues of judicial responsibility. In response to the growing backlog, the government has introduced new legislation and formed committees aimed at clearing the burden.
