Smithsonian's 1881 Arts and Industries Building to House National Museum of American Latino

The Smithsonian Board of Regents has chosen the historic Arts and Industries Building on the National Mall as the permanent home for the National Museum of the American Latino. The decision ends a lengthy debate over where the museum should be located. Built in 1881 and restored at a cost of $55 million after closing in 2004, the building will be renovated and modernized to suit the museum's needs. Selecting this existing structure means congressional approval for a new dedicated building will not be required. The museum had already offered visitors a preview of its collection when it opened a temporary space in 2022.
