SIU Scientists Convert Plastic and Corn Waste into Protein-Rich Space Food

Researchers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale are developing a novel food product called µBites, which are protein-rich cookies made from recycled PET plastic bottles and discarded corn stalks and leaves. Specially programmed yeasts are used to break down and convert these waste materials into proteins, fats, acids, and flavouring molecules. The project has ties to NASA and is focused on creating sustainable food solutions for environments with limited resources. One key application envisioned for µBites is providing nutrition for astronauts on future deep-space missions.
