Seven Islands Built from Mississippi Sand Restore 270 Acres at McGregor Lake

Engineers have completed a major habitat restoration project at McGregor Lake using sand dredged from the Mississippi River. The six-year initiative involved constructing seven artificial islands, improving floodplain forests, and safeguarding surrounding wetlands. In total, the project has revitalized more than 270 acres of aquatic habitat. The effort has boosted local biodiversity and supported wildlife in the region. A key goal of the project was to balance the needs of river navigation with long-term ecological conservation.
