San Antonio's discarded oyster shells being recycled to restore Gulf of Mexico reefs

Oyster shells discarded by San Antonio restaurants and events are being collected and repurposed to restore oyster reefs in the Gulf of Mexico. The South Texas Coastal Initiative partners with the Sink Your Shucks program to channel these shells into reef restoration efforts. The initiative gains significant momentum around the Fiesta Oyster Bake weekend, during which approximately 100,000 oysters are consumed. Organizers are now seeking $150,000 in annual funding to sustain and expand the program.
