Romania shuts sole nuclear plant after Danube levels drop sharply due to heat

Romania has shut down its only nuclear power plant, Cernavodă, following a significant drop in the Danube River's water levels caused by extreme heat. The plant is a critical energy source, responsible for generating approximately 20% of the country's total electricity supply. Low river levels have disrupted the cooling water intake the plant relies on to operate safely. Authorities do not expect the facility to resume operations for at least the next 10 days.
