Ring introduces TAKE encryption to limit police and Amazon access to videos

Amazon-owned Ring is rolling out a new encryption method called TAKE, or Throw Away the Key Encryption, for all its cameras starting in September. The system restricts when and how Amazon's cloud can access stored footage, while still supporting features like smart alerts, AI search, and video descriptions. Unlike traditional end-to-end encryption, TAKE is designed to limit what Ring can hand over to law enforcement or other third parties. The feature will be enabled by default for all Ring customers, regardless of whether they hold a paid subscription. The rollout comes amid a period of heightened scrutiny over Ring's data-sharing practices with police.
