Reef Sounds Attract Up to 14x More Baby Fish in Hawaii Study

Scientists have found that broadcasting healthy coral reef sounds can significantly attract young fish larvae to degraded reef sites. The research was conducted at Kāne'ohe Bay in Hawaii, where larval fish presence increased 4 to 14 times at locations playing the recordings. However, the effect was temporary and did not persist beyond the playback period. Researchers believe acoustic restoration could be a useful tool in broader coral reef recovery efforts. The study calls for further investigation into the long-term effects of this approach on fish populations.
