iWinBridge, a local-first clipboard-sharing app for iPhone and Windows, uses QR code scanning to pair devices instead of requiring users to manually enter IP addresses. The developer argues that IP addresses are error-prone, can change after router restarts, and give users no confidence they are connecting to the correct device. Scanning a QR code converts a passive network discovery event into a deliberate, user-confirmed pairing action, clearly separating discovery, authorization, and data transfer as distinct steps. Because local networks — such as shared offices or guest Wi-Fi — are not inherently trustworthy, the app also applies application-level authenticated encryption to protect clipboard contents beyond physical proximity.
