Pocketty iPhone SSH client notifies users when remote tasks need attention

A developer has released Pocketty, an SSH terminal application for iPhone and iPad. The app connects directly to a user's computer via SSH and integrates with a separate tool called herdr, which monitors remote terminal sessions. When a monitored session requires user input, the system sends an encrypted push notification to the phone. The app offers a 14-day free trial, after which it requires a one-time purchase. The developer states the app does not require an account and collects no analytics.

Developer uses AI coding agent to build serverless API on AWS

A developer documented how they utilized an AI coding agent to streamline AWS deployment. The agent configured AWS tooling and proposed a serverless architecture using API Gateway, Lambda, and DynamoDB. After the developer approved the plan, the agent deployed a functional counter API in the us-east-2 region. The process allowed the developer to focus on design while the agent handled setup and implementation. The resulting API was tested and confirmed to be operational and stateful.

MLPerf Inference v6.1 introduces benchmarks for real-world AI pipelines and agent coding.

MLCommons released new AI performance benchmarks on September 16. The MLPerf Inference v6.1 suite includes two tests for complex AI systems. One evaluates end-to-end retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, which combine multiple models. The other measures the performance of AI coding agents by replaying 1,007 real interaction turns. These benchmarks aim to reflect how AI is actually deployed, moving beyond single-model speed tests.

NatureQuest OS Uses Offline AI to Encourage Outdoor Exploration

NatureQuest is an offline botanical operating system designed to reduce screen time by encouraging outdoor activity. It functions as a field guide for identifying plants using on-device AI, requiring no internet connection or cloud services. The system includes features like a dimmed 'Zen Mode' and sensory challenges to focus users on their natural surroundings. It was created as a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge and is available under an MIT license.

Small AI models outperform larger ones by thinking longer during inference

Recent AI research has identified test-time compute, where models spend more processing time reasoning after a prompt, as a key factor for performance. A 2024 study found that a model four times smaller, using advanced reasoning strategies, could match or beat models up to 14 times its size on complex tasks without extra training. This has led major AI releases to incorporate 'thinking' modes as a standard feature. The primary methods include letting the model write longer internal reasoning, taking majority votes from multiple attempts, and using verifiers to score and select the best solution.
