Pithoragarh's Ancient Fossils Could Make It India's First UNESCO Global Geopark

Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand has yielded ancient stromatolite fossil colonies representing some of the earliest known evidence of life on Earth. Researchers have also identified similar geological formations in surrounding areas, pointing to broader regional significance. UNESCO Global Geoparks are designated sites recognised for their outstanding geological heritage, supporting both conservation and sustainable development. India currently has no UNESCO Global Geopark, and Pithoragarh is emerging as a strong candidate for this distinction.
