PossessedShell: A Victorian-Themed Terminal Companion Uses Local Gemma 2 to Diagnose Failed Commands

PossessedShell is an open-source companion for zsh and bash that uses a locally run Gemma 2 model to analyze commands that exit with errors. The tool captures the failing command, its error output, and exit code, then produces a plain-language diagnosis along with one suggested fix that is pre-filled for the user to accept or decline. It also intercepts destructive commands such as rm -rf and git push --force, asking for confirmation before they run. A background monitor additionally warns when CPU or memory usage becomes excessive. The developer built the project as an entry in a Hacktoberfest open-source AI challenge, and the whimsical Victorian ghost theme is layered over functional diagnostics.

Booya: Free Open-Source Screen Recorder Auto-Zooms on Clicks and Typing

Booya is a free, open-source, local-first screen recorder available for macOS, Windows and Linux. It automatically zooms into areas of activity when a user clicks several times in quick succession or types, and eases back out during scrolling. Speech is transcribed into captions entirely on the user's own machine using Whisper, so no audio leaves the laptop. The app also includes polish features such as camera layouts, device frames, motion blur and background music that ducks under narration. Its developer built it as a Hacktoberfest AI Challenge entry, and the v0.7.0 release is available for download.

Beginner's guide to hosting a Minecraft server: self-hosting versus a hosting provider

A Minecraft server runs the shared world and relays every player's actions, and players connect to it by IP address or domain name. Hosting it on your own PC is free but requires port forwarding and that the machine stays powered on, while a hosting company keeps it online in a data centre and offers a web control panel. Memory needs depend on player count, world spread and modpack size, with a small Paper server for a few friends typically running on 1 GB and modpacks needing at least 2 GB. Lag usually stems from large farms, redstone clocks, many loaded entities or chunk generation, and can be reduced by lowering view and simulation distance or pre-generating the world. The guide also covers server types, useful free plugins, and the importance of regular backups before updates.

Freelance Proposal Writing Tips: A Beginner's Guide to Winning Clients

The guide argues that strong freelance skills alone are not enough, since freelancers must also show clients why they are the right fit for a project. It advises against sending identical messages to everyone and urges writers to first study the client's needs, goals, required skills, and deadlines. Openings should be short and tied directly to the project rather than long personal introductions. Proposals should highlight how a freelancer's relevant abilities solve the client's problems, supported by a focused portfolio, with beginners encouraged to create sample work.
