OpenAI Expands Zero Data Retention Policy for Enterprise and Frontier Model APIs

OpenAI is making Zero Data Retention (ZDR) available by request to eligible enterprise customers and API users working with its frontier AI models. Under ZDR, OpenAI disables logging of customer content for abuse monitoring and model-training purposes, and forces the store parameter to false for chat completions. The policy is a configurable option at the organization and project level, not a universal default across all OpenAI services or endpoints. However, some application state, metadata, and safety-related retention mechanisms may still apply in certain circumstances, meaning ZDR does not guarantee zero data persistence in all cases. Organizations are advised to evaluate retention policies endpoint by endpoint rather than assuming full coverage based on the ZDR label alone.
