Open AI Models Close Gap With Paid Frontier Models Within 4 Months, Mozilla Finds

A new report from Mozilla, previewed exclusively by Ars Technica, examines the capability gap between paid frontier AI models and free open-source alternatives. The findings suggest that subscribing to leading commercial AI models offers roughly a four-month performance advantage over cheaper open models. However, that head start comes at approximately five times the cost of using open alternatives. The report highlights how rapidly open-source AI models are catching up to their expensive commercial counterparts in terms of capability.
