India hits record 20,138 organ transplants in 2025, ranks third globally

India performed over 20,000 organ transplants for the first time in 2025, recording 20,138 procedures in total. The milestone places India third in the world for organ transplants, behind only the United States and China. Delhi-NCR led all regions in transplant volume, while Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of deceased organ donors. Despite the progress, deceased donor transplants remain insufficient to meet the country's overall demand for organs. The government has launched initiatives to further strengthen organ donation and transplant infrastructure nationwide.

Supreme Court allows states to drop cases against student protesters

The Supreme Court has permitted state governments to withdraw cases filed against students who participated in protests, enabling them to continue their education without fear of prosecution. However, the relief will not extend to individuals who already have prior criminal records. The court also announced plans to frame guidelines governing the use of graded force by police during protests. Deliberations on the exact modalities for identifying and clearing cases against genuine student protesters are still underway.

India's Census 2027 Phase 2 Starts Aug 17, to Include Caste Data After 96 Years

India will begin the second phase of Census 2027 population enumeration on August 17, starting with snow-bound northern regions. For the first time since 1931, caste details will be recorded as part of the exercise. The census will also capture parents' dates of birth and birthplaces as self-declared by respondents. On a voluntary basis, individuals may provide their Aadhaar and passport numbers during the enumeration. The official questionnaire for this phase is expected to be formally notified in the near future.
