Oman Proposes Shared Governance Model to Reduce Iran's Control Over Strait of Hormuz

Oman has put forward a proposal to restructure the governance of the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to reduce Iran's exclusive hold over the critical waterway. The plan is modeled after the Strait of Malacca framework, where user nations voluntarily contribute funds toward navigation safety, environmental protection, and search-and-rescue operations. Under this model, countries that rely on the Hormuz passage for trade would share responsibility for maintaining and securing it. The proposal seeks to internationalize oversight of the strait, which is one of the world's most strategically vital oil shipping routes. If adopted, the framework could dilute Iran's singular leverage over a chokepoint through which a significant portion of global energy supplies passes.
