Five PDF compressors tested on a signed file; two deleted the signature entirely

A developer signed a fictional one-page PDF and ran it through five common compressors, with every output failing signature validation. Four tools retained the original signature dictionary, but the byte ranges no longer matched the rewritten file, so validators judged them invalid. Two tools, Ghostscript and iLovePDF, removed the signature field altogether, producing files that show no error and may still display a visible signed-by stamp. The author notes the danger is greatest in the second case, since recipients have no reason to check. The tests found that local and cloud-based tools alike rewrote the file bytes, so the problem was not tied to where processing happened.

OLED Monitor Shipments Set to Surge in 2026, Led by Dual-Mode Models

Market research firm Omdia projects that 6.1 million OLED monitor panels will ship in 2026, a 79% increase over 2025, with 7.5 million expected in 2027. TrendForce data shows OLED monitor shipments nearly doubled year over year in Q2 2026, largely driven by new 27-inch models. OLED still accounts for only a small share of a total monitor market of roughly 125-130 million units annually. Notable launches include LG's dual-mode UltraGear 32-inch, which switches between 4K 240Hz and 1080p 480Hz, and ASUS's third-generation ROG Swift PG32UCDM. Manufacturers are also addressing earlier criticisms such as text fringing and burn-in, while cheaper production methods point to lower prices through 2027.

Edited signed PDFs can pass pdfsig validation, so ByteRange must be checked against file size

A developer found that pdfsig reported a signed PDF as valid after a one-line edit appended to the file, while pyHanko flagged the same change as an illegal modification. The discrepancy arises because pdfsig only verifies the hash of the originally signed bytes, which remained unchanged. To detect post-signing changes, the author wrote a check comparing each signature's ByteRange end offset with the file size, which distinguishes full coverage, appended updates, and rewritten files. Rewritten copies from several PDF tools, including a compressor, showed ranges extending past the end of the file. The author notes that a heuristic based on file size alone may fail for rewrites that grow the file, and suggests counting %%EOF markers as a possible fix.
