NetworkManager Checkpoint Feature Lets Admins Safely Test Remote Config Changes

NetworkManager's nmcli checkpoint feature allows system administrators to create a restore point before applying network configuration changes on remote servers. When modifying settings such as IP addresses, gateways, or bridge configurations over SSH, a checkpoint automatically rolls back all changes if the connection drops and no confirmation is received within a set timeout. Admins create a checkpoint using 'nmcli device checkpoint create' with a specified timeout in seconds, then apply their changes and verify connectivity. If the changes succeed, the checkpoint is discarded with 'nmcli device checkpoint destroy'; if they fail, 'nmcli device checkpoint rollback' reverts the state immediately. The feature only covers devices managed by NetworkManager and requires the NetworkManager service to remain running for automatic rollback to work.
