Native CSS in 2026 Can Replace Most Framework Features, Developers Argue

A growing argument among web developers suggests that modern CSS has matured enough to handle most tasks that once required frameworks like Bootstrap or Tailwind. Features such as CSS Grid with subgrid, container queries, native nesting, and custom properties now address the core problems those frameworks were built to solve. For much of the past decade, reaching for a CSS framework was considered best practice because the language itself lacked tools for responsive layouts, theming, and component-level styling. The case being made is not that frameworks are harmful, but that teams often adopt them out of habit without checking whether the platform has since provided native solutions. Developers are being encouraged to evaluate specific requirements before defaulting to a framework, as vanilla CSS may now be sufficient for many modern projects.
