NASA Tests Autonomous Landing Tech on Drone, Showing Promise for Planetary Missions

NASA has shown that its technology can help spacecraft navigate on their own to safe landing spots on the Moon and other planets. On August 27, an Alta-X drone fitted with the agency's SPLICE guidance, navigation, and control payload carried out simulated lunar descent and landing maneuvers. The test demonstrates a capability intended to let future landers avoid hazards without relying entirely on ground control. The results point to potential improvements in precision landings for upcoming planetary missions.

Hubble Study Finds Missing Oxygen in Nearby Dwarf Galaxies

NASA released a Hubble Space Telescope photo on November 2, 2026, showing the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 4449. Researchers examined 37 nearby dwarf galaxies, which hold anywhere from a few thousand to several hundred million stars. Their analysis, which included NGC 4449, revealed that a significant portion of the oxygen scientists expected to find is absent. The discrepancy points to an unresolved gap in current understanding of how these small galaxies store and distribute elements.

Astronauts Capture Pre-Dawn Lights Over America's Midwest

With almost no clouds in the sky, astronauts aboard the International Space Station had a wide view of nighttime illumination across the U.S. Midwest. The clear conditions allowed the city and town lights of the region to stand out sharply from the darkness below. The imagery reflects the vantage point crews have from orbit as they pass over the country before sunrise. The article presents the scene as a visual snapshot rather than reporting on any particular event.
