NASA engineer and astronaut Christina Koch will assume the role of acting deputy chief engineer starting November 1. She is taking over following the retirement of Katherine Van Hooser, who served the agency for over 35 years. In this position, Koch will help lead NASA's broader engineering community. This appointment marks a continuation of her career, which has included service as a flight engineer on the International Space Station.
NASA has compared the distances traveled by various rovers on the Moon and Mars. The agency's Perseverance and Curiosity rovers on Mars are still operational and continue to move. The driving distances for these two rovers were current as of October 11, 2026. The data illustrates the extended missions and exploration range of NASA's Martian vehicles.
NASA's Perseverance rover mission team was presented with a Guinness World Records certificate for the rover's driving distance on Mars. The ceremony took place in the Mars Yard at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The team gathered in front of a full-scale rover model known as OPTIMISM, which is used for testing. The award commemorates the Perseverance rover achieving the longest distance driven by a vehicle on the Martian surface.
NASA is preparing three small spacecraft for an October 2026 launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellites will be part of a multi-payload mission alongside numerous commercial payloads. The missions include ASCENT, SPRITE, and SSPICY, which are designed as technology demonstrators. Their primary objectives are to test new propulsion systems and scientific instruments in space.
