NASA Backs Plan to Deploy 10,000 Tiny Steerable Satellites Around Saturn

Northwestern University researcher Michael Rubenstein has proposed a NASA mission to deploy approximately 10,000 actively steerable femtosatellites around Saturn. The miniature spacecraft would conduct in-situ surveys of the planet's ring composition, atmospheric density, and magnetic field distribution. The proposal argues that relying on a single large flagship mission, like the Cassini spacecraft, poses an unacceptably high risk of total mission failure. Spreading the workload across thousands of small satellites would provide redundancy and far broader coverage of Saturn's complex environment.
