PHP's Quirks Under the Spotlight: Falsy Strings, Array Key Collisions, and Reference Pitfalls

A developer revisits PHP, one of the web's longest-running and most criticized languages, to highlight surprising behaviors in ordinary code. The article notes that PHP treats the string "0" and empty strings as falsy while "00" and "false" are truthy, which can wrongly reject valid input. It also explains that PHP array keys undergo implicit type conversion, so keys like "8" and 8 collide and integer, string, and boolean keys can overwrite each other. Finally, it describes how a foreach loop that iterates by reference can leave a lingering reference that corrupts array values in a later loop, a documented behavior the fix for which is to unset the reference.

Karasu tunes AI code review for agent PRs with risk tiers and a local-first gate

The third weekly update on karasu, a text modeling language for system architecture, covers 50 merged PRs, 11 of them from Dependabot, and six decisions recorded as ADRs. The author describes using path-based risk tiers to decide how deeply a change is reviewed, with ADR and test-only changes merging automatically after approval. Pull requests leaving draft must first pass a local review and a CodeRabbit CLI run, because written process steps were not reliably followed and were backed by hooks instead. The AI review's effectiveness is measured with an eval of 19 past bugs, which rose from 5 to 7 caught after guideline revisions, though the author notes this figure is generous since the same cases were used for tuning. The update also reports a fix to karasu serve, which previously could not render models that import other files, and a new file-serving approach that sends the whole project directory in one response.

Two AI summaries of a pricing page gave different prices and an invented five-user rule

A comparison table needed a competitor's published price, so the same public pricing page was summarised twice by an AI tool. The two summaries disagreed on the price, and both wrongly stated that the mid plan included five users. The page actually labels every plan as one user, with the per-seat fee of $29 shown only in a tooltip. Opening the page in a browser revealed that ten people on the mid plan would cost $410 a month, a figure far higher than the invented rule implied. The author concludes that AI can help find and organise sources, but any specific figure published for readers should be checked against the original page and dated.

Inspecting emitted JavaScript before replacing TypeScript enums with literal unions

A developer tested how TypeScript enums, literal unions, and as const objects behave at runtime, using TypeScript 7.0.2 and Node.js 24.15.0. Regular numeric enums emit JavaScript objects with reverse mappings, while string enums emit only forward mappings, and literal unions disappear entirely after compilation. The experiment showed that a string matching an enum member's value is still rejected when assigned directly to a string enum type, producing error TS2322. Under isolatedModules set to false, a const enum was inlined into the output, whereas with isolatedModules set to true the object access remained, and the erasableSyntaxOnly option rejected both regular and const enums. The author notes that these results apply to same-file definitions and do not cover ambient declarations or mismatched library versions.
