Engineers managing semantic search at scale are increasingly abandoning self-hosted vector indexing solutions like pgvector in favour of managed services such as Pinecone and Databricks Mosaic AI Vector Search. While pgvector integrates directly with existing Postgres infrastructure and suits teams with embedding counts in the low millions, it forces engineers to manage memory, CPU contention, and costly reindexing operations alongside standard database workloads. Managed services abstract away index maintenance, shard management, and hardware provisioning, shifting the operational burden to vendors and reducing engineer downtime during peak traffic events. Although managed services appear costlier on paper, the hidden labour expenses of debugging and maintaining self-hosted vector infrastructure can make them more economical for larger teams. The choice between the three approaches largely depends on data location, team expertise, and the scale of vector operations involved.
