Mamata Banerjee approaches Supreme Court over EC freeze on TMC name and symbol

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission's decision to freeze the Trinamool Congress name and symbol. The poll body took the step ahead of upcoming bypolls scheduled for October 6. Mamata's faction was assigned a new name and symbol for the elections, while a rival faction received a separate identity. The Election Commission had not yet resolved the dispute over which faction holds the original party identity. The matter now moves to the Supreme Court for adjudication.
