Landlords cannot legally install CCTV cameras that invade tenants' private spaces

Indian courts have made clear that landlords do not hold unlimited rights to surveil rented properties. The Supreme Court has recognized privacy as a fundamental component of personal liberty. A Calcutta High Court ruling specifically upheld tenants' right to privacy against intrusive camera placement. Existing laws prohibit the intentional recording of a tenant's private areas without their consent. Tenants can therefore seek legal recourse if surveillance equipment is found to violate their reasonable expectation of privacy.
