Kubernetes amplifies code quality issues rather than fixing them, engineer warns

Software engineer Sergey Shinder argues that Kubernetes does not make fragile applications robust — it only makes already-robust applications easier to operate at scale. He notes that poor practices such as improper process shutdown handling or storing state in local memory are exposed and amplified by the platform's ephemeral nature. Shinder cautions that small teams running a handful of services with modest traffic often face unnecessary operational complexity by adopting Kubernetes prematurely. The overhead of managing clusters, certificates, networking, and resource tuning carries a real human cost that a well-configured single machine can avoid. His personal rule is to introduce Kubernetes only when the pain of operating without it becomes concrete and measurable, not as a trend-driven choice.
