India's retail inflation rises to 4.38% in June, crossing RBI's 4% threshold

India's retail inflation climbed to 4.38% in June 2025, up from 3.93% in May, breaching the Reserve Bank of India's 4% target. The rise was largely driven by higher food prices, which pushed the Consumer Price Index upward. Vegetables such as ginger and tomatoes recorded sharp year-on-year price increases, fuelling the uptick. However, not all food items turned costlier — potatoes and peas saw prices fall compared to the same period last year. Rural regions reported steeper inflation than urban areas during the month.
