The galaxy is located approximately 17 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Coma Berenices. M64 is notable for an unusual dynamic in which gas in its outer regions rotates in the opposite direction to the gas and stars near its centre. NASA scientists believe this counter-rotation is likely a remnant of a merger between M64 and a smaller satellite galaxy that occurred over a billion years ago.
