India Weighs Small UPI Fee That Could Reshape Digital Payment Economics

A proposed 0.4% fee on UPI transactions is being debated as a potential shift in how India's digital payment ecosystem is funded. While UPI has always been free for end users at the point of sale, the underlying infrastructure has never truly been cost-free — banks and payment processors have quietly absorbed those expenses. Introducing even a marginal charge could alter the financial burden currently borne by service providers and possibly affect consumer behavior.
