Advanced weather forecasting models could significantly boost water availability across California, according to new findings. A strategy known as Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations (FIRO) could generate an additional 315,000 acre-feet of usable water each year. This approach benefits both agricultural and urban water users, offering substantial economic value estimated at up to $200 million annually. Beyond water supply, FIRO also improves flood management and supports environmental water flow.
