India Permits 1 Million Tonnes of Duty-Free Sugar Imports Until October 31

The Indian government has approved the import of up to 10 lakh tonnes of sugar without customs duty, with the scheme valid until October 31. The move is aimed at controlling rising domestic sugar prices. Alongside the import relief, the Centre has also introduced stockholding restrictions on bulk sugar consumers. Those who use more than 10 tonnes of sugar per month will be capped at holding a maximum of 15 days' worth of stock. These measures together are intended to stabilize sugar supply and prevent hoarding in the market.
