Nashville Songwriter, 78, Logs 234 Hours Rescuing Mange-Stricken Foxes

Jerry Vandiver, a 78-year-old Nashville-based songwriter, has channeled his time and energy into rescuing red foxes suffering from mange. He traps the sick animals and transports them to Walden's Puddle Wildlife Center, where they receive professional care. In August alone, Vandiver accumulated 234 volunteer hours dedicated to this effort. His work has helped numerous foxes recover and be released back into the wild. California's Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has acquired 640 acres of land northwest of Pioneertown in San Bernardino County to protect western Joshua tree habitat. The acquisition was completed on August 24 using funds from the Western Joshua Tree Conservation Fund. The land is located in a desert region where western Joshua trees are a prominent part of the ecosystem.
