A retired individual deposited Rs 1.33 crore in his bank account but did not file an Income Tax Return for the relevant assessment year. The Income Tax Department, lacking details of his earnings for that period, issued a notice scrutinising the deposits. The case was subsequently brought before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) for adjudication. The ITAT examined the matter and delivered a ruling addressing whether the tax department's action against the retired individual was justified.
