Hubble detects UV light from ancient galaxy once thought impossible

Astronomers have discovered a tiny but powerful ancient galaxy, designated MXDFz4.4, dating back to the universe's earliest period. The galaxy was first observed by the Hubble Space Telescope and subsequently confirmed by additional powerful telescopes. It is emitting high-energy ultraviolet light, a phenomenon scientists had previously considered impossible for galaxies of that era. The finding provides rare insight into how early galaxies may have begun dispersing the dense cosmic fog that once blocked light from travelling freely through the universe.
