Actress Mariska Hargitay helped back an effort to test 11,341 sexual assault evidence kits found in a Detroit police warehouse in 2009. The kits had gone untested for years, and some of the cases dated back to 1984. The project, led by Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, had produced 263 convictions as of April 2025. Investigations connected to the initiative are still ongoing across the United States.
